Lintel & Arch Bar Replacement

Replacing corroded steel lintels and arch bars above windows and doors to stop cracking and protect the surrounding brickwork.

Brickwork above windows, doors and other openings relies on structural support such as steel lintels and arch bars. With age and exposure to moisture, these components can corrode and deteriorate, potentially affecting the masonry they support.

As steel corrodes it can expand to about 7 times its original size, placing a lot of pressure on the surrounding brickwork. This may appear as cracking, bulging or lifting above windows and doors.

Recognising the Signs

Early signs of lintel or arch bar deterioration can include:

  • Cracking above windows or doors

  • Bulging or displaced brickwork

  • Rust staining

  • Deterioration of mortar joints

  • Brickwork lifting or separating around an opening

  • Cracked and loose render on concrete lintels

These issues should be assessed promptly. Left untreated, corrosion can continue to affect the surrounding masonry and lead to more extensive structural repairs.

Careful Structural Restoration

At Craftpoint we carefully assess the condition of the existing support and surrounding brickwork before determining the appropriate repair.

Where replacement is required we can remove deteriorated steel components and install suitable replacement supports, including hot-dip galvanised or pre-stressed concrete lintels where appropriate.

The surrounding brickwork can then be repaired and repointed to restore the opening and integrate the new structural work with the existing masonry.

Whether working on a traditional brick arch, window opening or door lintel, our focus is on achieving a sound repair while preserving as much of the original brickwork and character of the building as possible.
